How to use Funny Phonics Flashcards
I will do it myself...
In our experience, children love to do things themselves, it gives them a real sense of achievement and as we’ve learned they thrive on reward and recognition, so they often do things independently to earn that praise.
Whilst our Funny Phonics flashcards are 100% designed to be a shared, active and fun activity, we’ve made them simple enough for a child to pick up independently and start to engage in the reading process themselves, when they
fancy it. In fact leaving the cards out and accessible will really help them to take an active role in the learning process. Don't worry if they don't get it right all the time during their own play... the fact they want to pick them up is the most important thing.
For example in this home video clip…
Plus, our designs are created with children in mind!
Our cards work because they are designed specifically to appeal to the minds and imaginations of children; our illustrations are hand-drawn (which children can identify with) and they are either funny or gross or both… so always memorable.
This means that after only a few run throughs you’ll notice your child recalling images and character names quickly; and very soon after that they'll be able to get the correct letters and sounds too. Woohoo!
Meaning you can give them that all important praise. #parentingwin
How to start off with your child?
Our cards are purposely double-sided to aid the learning process for your children:
Side 1
- shows the image and only a small version of the letter illustration.
Side 2
- shows a larger letter illustration and some small elements of the character design around it.
Funny Phonics created this format to allow children to recall what they've been learning quickly and to build their confidence every single time! Plus, our designs are super engaging and fun, which means
it'll be the children that
want
to get involved… which as we all know is half the battle!
We’d recommend starting off by using the picture side first, and as they develop moving onto the letter side. This will allow children to become familiar with the pictures and feel happy and confident having a go, before stepping it up and recognising the sounds and letters themselves.
You can also help them further with this process by being a bit silly when practicing, for example acting out some motions such as ‘a stinky smell action’ for Dinosaur Dung or a 'wagging finger' for Naughty Nan. All our cards are designed to allow this kind of role play. Plus, don’t forget to ask the children to 'say what they see' this will encourage even further engagement.
It's that simple with Funny Phonics as our designs do most of the hard work, so go forth and enjoy... and remember funny reading all.

Did you know?
We’re working on our Funny Phonics sound app… which is coming very soon, to help you with your reading practice and the good news is it can be used alongside the cards.
Plus, check back in a few days to download our writing chart (currently in development) which maps out all of our letters for tracing the correct writing movements and moves your child onto the next stage.

We're so excited to announce that our very first Funny Phonics product is coming soon! Our A-Z flashcards have been lovingly and individually hand-illustrated. Plus, we've made every one of them fully funny, gloriously gross or magically memorable - so that your little ones get the very best head-start with recognising and reading letters. It's so important to us that children find their reading materials fun and engaging and we can't wait for you all to see our cards.
